We would like to extend our sincere congratulations to Damian Boylan, friend, advocate and member of the Irish Haemochromatosis Association, who has just been elected as the new Lord Mayor of Cork! Damian has been an amazing public representative for several years and has made it his mission to raise awareness of haemochromatosis, having been diagnosed himself 23 years ago.
‘We are Family’ HUK Haemochromatosis Event Belfast
Haemochromatosis UK are hosting a haemochromatosis in-person event in Belfast on the 7th October 2026. Everyone is welcome to attend. Local, national, and international standard experts will deliver a dedicated programme of talks in the beautiful Titanic Hotel. This conference is relevant to anyone affected across the UK and Ireland – even further afield.
World Haemochromatosis Awareness Week, 1-7th June 2026
World Haemochromatosis Awareness Week launches!! This is the most important time of the year, when we urge everyone in Ireland to recognise the symptoms of the nation’s ‘Hidden Condition’, often called the ‘Celtic Gene’. Sister and brother, Emilia and Teddy Eustace joined Alice Kelly, Anna McCarthy and Brian Keegan to launch the week.

Dublin hosted the European Iron Club Conference in the Business School venue in Trinity College Dublin from the 18th to the 20th June. The event was organised by Professor Suzanne Cloonan, Trinity College and Professor John Ryan, RCSI.

Free online workshops: ‘Living Well with Chronic Pain’ for patients and caregivers
Whether you are a patient or a caregiver, we are inviting our haemochromatosis community to sign up to FREE online workshops on ‘Living Well with Chronic Pain’. The Association, in partnership with the HSE is delivering these workshops for patients. Two trained leaders run the workshops. The start date is Wednesday, 25th March.
Ground-breaking study: Professor Jim Wilson & fellow researchers have mapped the genetic risk for haemochromatosis across the UK and Ireland
New research funded by Haemochromatosis UK and led by Professor Jim Wilson at University of Edinburgh has mapped genetic hotspots for haemochromatosis across the UK and Ireland. Analysing data from over 10,000 volunteers and large population cohorts, the study found the highest genetic risk in north-west Ireland and the Outer Hebrides.

NW & Sligo Study Day for Venesection Nurse Training
The Hospital Saturday Fund has provided continued support to us for venesection nurse training and education for GP Practice Nurses, especially in the North West. As part of this funding, we partnered with the Education and Training Programme team in Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon and Donegal to develop a competency-based curriculum to manage venesection treatment for patients
